UNBLOCKING WEBSITES

I am frustrated at the number of web sites that are blocked from the district web service. Great Web 2.0 sites are available, yet blocked. For example, blogs have a great use in the classroom! Teachers can create a daily log of what is going on in class for students, parents, and admin to keep track. Yet the web site to create a blog is blocked. Slideshare is also a web 2.0 tool that would allow students and teachers to upload PowerPoint and embed these into the blogs or websites, then anyone without PP could still see the project. I really would love help to begin the conversation with the Tech department on how to get these good tools UNBLOCKED.

WORDLE - Beautiful Word Clouds

Wordle is one of my favorite sites for these awesome word clouds. Just type in text (like science above was typed in multiple times, so it has more weight). All the smallest words were typed in just once. Check out the wordle site for other's word clouds.

Mywebspiration.com is another of the great WEB 2.0 tools. The one thing I like about it more than bubbl.us is that I can convert it to an outline form with longer descriptions of each topic in the web graphic organizer. The embed code is available after using the sharing tab, publish to a URL, then at the bottom of the published web page is the "copy embed code".

Moses Lake Sand Dunes or THE MOON?

So, where are these Astronauts? Could it be the moon? If so, there were a lot of spectators. It was an exciting day to watch NASA scientists work and test their moon designs in the desert sands of Moses Lake's south end sand dunes. We do hope the space men will return soon!

Another great Web 2.0 is Slide Share @ slideshare.net. It enables one to embed a power point into a web page or blog. The beauty of this is that #1: people don't have to leave your web site to see your slideshow #2: Even if the computer does not have the power point program, someone can still view the power point!!

EETT has been such a terrific grant program. I have appreciated Karen Schmitten SO MUCH! I have encouraged many Moses Lake teachers to apply. As I work with teachers it is great to have this mini-tutorial for them to refer back to in order to refresh their memories about using inquiry boards in their science classrooms. I am also working on getting the inquiry board templates as an interactive on the StarBoard.

Schooltube.com is another resource I learned about at NCCE 2008 Portland. The video that we saw during one of the sessions was "The Bad Date". They use word frequency data to compare ratios on time spent talking! It is funny, information, and nicely done. I am wondering if this is something I could create using the avatar making web site Voki ?? So, here is the video.

How about voicethread?? I think it has so much potential for collaboration and for the classroom. One of the things that was the biggest impact for me was the embed capability of all the Web 2.0 devices. So, here is my first voicethread, just a crazy thing about my boys.
